Contemporary, individually colored itajime (fold and dye) papers are designed and produced by Kristoferson Studio. They are based on a Japanese dyed paper folk tradition of intricate fold and clamp shibori techniques. High quality calligraphy inks that are light fast and wash-fast are used to color these papers. Various colors of the calligraphy ink are applied to dry fold and clamped papers to achieve the characteristic repeat patterns.
The majority of papers used are thin, un-sized papers that have great wet strength. Frequently the papers have a percentage of long paper fibers such as mitzumata, kozo and gampi. Many other types, weights and sizes of papers, including heavy hemp papers, gossamer lace and papers from a long roll can be used at your request. Kristoferson Studio usually dyes sheet papers sized approximately 18 x 24″. The papers are useful for many bookarts, arts and interior design applications. Editions of papers are available if ordered simultaneously.
